Alarming Rise in Pet Neglect Cases in East Yorkshire
East Yorkshire has recorded one of the steepest increases in pet neglect incidents, with 640 cases reported between January and September 2024. This marks a 26% rise compared to the same period in 2023, according to RSPCA figures. The county’s increase is the fifth highest in the country.

Nationwide, pet neglect cases have surged by 25% in the past year, with the RSPCA emergency line receiving a call every four minutes. Abandonment cases have also risen significantly, climbing by 30% over the past three years.
Causes and Concerns
The RSPCA attributes these troubling statistics to increased pet ownership during the COVID-19 pandemic and the strain of rising living costs. Superintendent Jo Hirst expressed deep concern, saying:
“The large 25% increase in the number of pet neglect calls we are taking is a major concern during our busy winter period when many people are facing more financial difficulties. Sadly, we expect the crisis to worsen as costs increase around Christmas time.”
Hirst also highlighted that financial pressures during the festive seasonβdue to gift purchases, extra food expenses, and rising energy billsβcould exacerbate the problem.
Christmas Campaign to Support Animals
To combat the growing crisis, the RSPCA has launched the Join the Christmas Rescue campaign. The initiative aims to support frontline staff in providing urgent treatment and care to neglected animals during the festive season.
Hirst encourages the public to back the appeal, emphasizing the need for immediate action to help vulnerable animals during these challenging times.
