Frozen in stillness, she lay motionless…

During a casual stroll with a canine companion along Ross Sands Beach in North East England, an observant individual stumbled upon an unusual sight—a mysterious white blob washed ashore. Filled with concern and curiosity, this Good Samaritan couldn’t resist the urge to investigate further. However, their heart sank as the reality of the situation unfolded before them.

Recognizing the need for expert intervention, the compassionate observer swiftly reached out to British Divers Marine Life Rescue for assistance. The poignant encounter marked the beginning of a rescue mission, sparked by the empathy of a passerby who refused to ignore the silent plea of an enigmatic presence on the shoreline.

The small white lump turned out to be a grey seal pup that had washed too far ashore and was struggling to survive.

A person walking their dog discovered the pup on Ross Sands Beach in North East England. Concerned and wanting to help, they quickly contacted British Divers Marine Life Rescue.

Marine mammal medic Lynn Young arrived on the scene and initially feared the pup wasn’t breathing. However, there was a sigh of relief when the little seal pup moved its head, showing signs of life. The discovery marked the beginning of a rescue mission, highlighting the importance of quick and compassionate action to save a life in need.

Once they reached the scene, medics Lynn Young and Jane Hardy observed the seal colony from a distance, being careful not to disturb them. They had to figure out if the pup belonged to that colony or if it had drifted from another nearby one.

After watching for hours, a decision had to be made. The tide was rising, and the seal pup would soon be washed back into the ocean. Despite the rain, the medics gently wrapped the seal in a towel and took her to safety.

Surprisingly, the seal pup didn’t seem bothered by the move. She even slept during some of the journey, likely because she was cold, exhausted, and premature. In the end, the medics’ careful actions ensured the well-being of the little seal in need.

Rescuers took dedicated care of the baby seal, providing warmth under a heat lamp and regular fluids every few hours for a couple of days. Gradually, the pup’s strength started to rebound. Despite a bit of labored breathing, a veterinarian later confirmed that the seal’s lungs were in good condition, marking a positive turn in her recovery journey.

Eventually, the seal found refuge at Hessilhead Wildlife Rescue, where caring staff members bestowed upon her the name “Mystic.” In the secure haven of Hessilhead, it became evident that little Mystic was now out of harm’s way, surrounded by the dedicated care of those ensuring her well-being.
