A few weeks back, the Animal Care Centers of NYC (ACC) found a dog wandering alone in the Bronx and took him in. The shelter staff quickly grew fond of him. They named him Jose and shared a video on TikTok introducing their latest addition.
“Weighing 135 pounds, he was a lovable, gentle giant who was too charming not to share,” ACC mentioned in the TikTok. Meanwhile, Jose’s owner, Mecca, was desperately missing him. He had no idea where his dog was and worried he might never find him.
Fortunately, this story has a happy ending. While searching all over New York for his lost dog, Mecca stumbled upon the TikTok video that changed everything.
On his TikTok feed, he saw the video posted by the shelter featuring Jose. Mecca instantly recognized his beloved pet. Without delay, he contacted ACC, informing them that “Jose” was actually named Mecca Jr. and that he had been tirelessly searching for him.
The very next day, Mecca hurried to the shelter to reunite with Mecca Jr. The moment Mecca Jr. saw his owner, he transformed—it was as if he had become an entirely different dog.
“As soon as Jose saw him, he shed his gentle, aloof demeanor, revealing his true wiggly and goofy self. He showered his dad with nonstop hugs,” ACC shared.
Typically, ACC follows a procedure to verify that people claiming a dog are indeed the rightful owners. However, given Mecca Jr.’s exuberant reaction, it was unmistakable that this dog and this human were meant to be together.
This story highlights the importance of microchipping pets—had Mecca Jr. been microchipped, both he and Mecca could have avoided the heartache and anxiety they experienced.
Fortunately, the story has a happy ending, as Mecca Jr. was able to return home with his dad. Their reunion clearly mended both their hearts.
