Australian Man Gets Surprise Visit From Two Curious Emus — and One Even Hops in His Pool
Earlier this week in Dawesville, Australia, Callum Jye Layton had a simple to-do list: stay home and tackle some chores while his wife was at work. But just as he started cleaning the gutters, he got a couple of very large distractions.
“I was cleaning my gutters when they walked up my driveway and through the gate that was open,” Layton told The Dodo.

The unexpected guests? A pair of wild emus.
Layton watched in stunned silence as the giant, flightless birds wandered casually onto his property. They roamed the yard, scoped out the place, and even paused to take a few sips from his dog’s water bowl.
“The emus were really relaxed,” Layton said.

Naturally, gutter-cleaning took a backseat as Layton followed their movements, fascinated. Then the birds noticed something that really piqued their interest: Layton’s pool.
“I really wanted to see them in the pool area, only because I just finished building it in December,” Layton said.
Sure enough, the emus made their way to the pool, and one boldly stepped in for a dip.

“I really wish I got in the pool with her and got a selfie,” Layton admitted. Instead, he filmed the surreal moment from a lounge chair, marveling at the scene playing out before him.
“It was a nice surprise,” he said. “A once-in-a-lifetime afternoon.”
After a few minutes of splashing and cooling off, the emus strolled back out the way they came, continuing their adventure elsewhere. Layton returned to his chores, but with a smile on his face and a memory he won’t soon forget.
“I wish they would come back,” he said. “It was an awesome thing to experience.”
