“It was an awesome thing to experience.”
Earlier this week in Dawesville, Australia, Callum Jye Layton was home alone while his wife was at work, spending the day tackling a few household chores.
But his plans quickly changed when a pair of unexpected visitors showed up.

“I was cleaning my gutters when they walked up my driveway and through the open gate,” Layton told The Dodo.
It was a pair of wild emus. Layton watched in disbelief as the large, flightless birds casually strolled onto his property and began exploring. At one point, they even stopped to drink from his dog’s water bowl.

“The emus were really relaxed,” he said.
With the birds now stealing the show, Layton paused his gutter cleaning to see what they’d do next. That’s when the emus discovered his newly built pool — and Layton couldn’t have been more excited.
“I really wanted to see them in the pool area, only because I just finished building it in December,” he said.

Sure enough, the emus obliged. One of them waded into the water while Layton watched from a poolside chair, amazed.
“I really wish I got in the pool with her and got a selfie,” he said. Instead, he recorded the unforgettable moment on video.
After a few minutes, the emus calmly made their way back out through the gate and continued on their way. Layton returned to his chores, grateful for the rare encounter.
“I wish they would come back,” he said. “It was an awesome thing to experience.”
