When Amber Rodriguez and her 13-year-old daughter set out for a routine Saturday of errands, they had no idea their lives were about to be changed forever. That morning started like any other — a stop at a department store, just another item checked off the list. But fate had other plans.
As they walked out of the store, something across the street caught their attention: an outdoor pet adoption event at a nearby pet supplies store. Curious, the pair decided to wander over — not with the intention of adopting, but simply to look and maybe dream a little.

The two leaned into one another through the bars of the crate — strangers no more. But eventually, they had to leave.
