Hunt Continues for Stowaway Grey Squirrel in Guernsey

Authorities in Guernsey are still searching for an invasive grey squirrel that has gone missing for nearly a week, with no recent sightings, according to the island’s government.

Efforts to capture the squirrel—nicknamed Elvis—are ongoing, with officials hoping to retrieve it alive using a humane trap. The animal was first spotted in February and is believed to have arrived on the island as an unintended stowaway, possibly via a vehicle.

A Race to Capture Elvis

Residents have been urged not to leave out food for the non-native squirrel, as this could hinder capture efforts. Officials hope to relocate Elvis to a more suitable environment where it can live among its own species.

Unlike the UK, where grey squirrels have spread rapidly since their introduction in the 19th century, Guernsey does not have an established population of the species. Authorities are therefore taking steps to ensure the rogue squirrel does not become the start of an ecological problem.

A New Home Awaits

The States of Guernsey confirmed that it had been in contact with a UK squirrel sanctuary that is willing to provide a home for Elvis. Other animal rescue organizations have also offered support.

“It is looking hopeful that it might be able to be safely returned to a more suitable environment,” the States said. However, there have been no confirmed sightings of Elvis since Friday.

Public Urged to Report Sightings

Authorities have asked anyone who spots the squirrel to avoid approaching it, as this could cause it to flee. Instead, they should contact Guernsey Pest Management.

Paul Allum, who runs Hitchin Squirrel Rescue in the UK, has offered to take Elvis in if it is successfully captured.

Due to UK regulations, grey squirrels—considered an invasive species—cannot be released back into the wild. Instead, if taken to the UK, Elvis would have to remain in a large outdoor enclosure.

Based on photographs, Allum believes Elvis appears to be in good health and estimates it could be “a last August baby,” meaning it is still relatively young.

As the search for the elusive stowaway continues, officials remain hopeful that Elvis will soon be found and relocated safely.
