The States of Alderney has officially approved an action plan for the West Coast and Burhou Islands Ramsar site, marking a significant step in conservation efforts. The plan includes the development of a five-year strategic framework, which will be managed by the Alderney Ramsar Secretariat on behalf of the States.

The strategic plan will explore potential rezoning of the site or the creation of additional Ramsar sites around Alderney to better meet conservation goals. Catherine Wensink from the UK Overseas Territory Conservation Forum praised the site, noting that “the Alderney Ramsar site has long been an example to others across the world on what can be achieved.”

Ramsar sites, defined by the Joint Nature Conservation Committee, are wetlands of international importance designated under the Ramsar Convention, an international treaty endorsed by the UK on behalf of the Channel Islands.

With the approval of the 2024 Action Plan by the General Services Committee, essential scientific work on the Ramsar site will continue through the rest of the year. This work includes research access to Burhou, monitoring of fish species, bird-ringing, and surveys of wetland birds, bats, and grey seals.

A budget of up to Β£18,000 has been allocated for these research and conservation activities, which are supported by volunteers. This funding will help ensure the ongoing preservation and study of the Ramsar site’s unique ecosystems.
