The furry friend was saved from a shelter and welcomed into the loving home of Bjorn Schembri five years ago.

In an extraordinary tale of transformation, a rescue dog, initially terrified of water, has defied all odds to become a seasoned deep-sea diver, reportedly surpassing the Guinness World Record for canine diving.

Bjorn Schembri, a 35-year-old adventurer hailing from Malta, discovered an unexpected bond when he visited his local animal rescue shelter in pursuit of a four-legged companion. Recounting the fateful encounter, Schembri shared, “I didn’t choose Misa. She chose me. She didn’t want to leave me.”

However, a peculiar challenge emerged when Schembri introduced Misa to the ocean, one of his beloved haunts. “I was carrying her myself when I first took her to the sea. She scratched all over my body; she didn’t want to touch the seawater. She was so afraid,” he recalled.

Living on an island in the Mediterranean Sea, Schembri recognized the importance of addressing this fear, and his determination to help Misa conquer her aquatic anxiety took center stage. “I thought, β€˜I need to do something about this. Because if she’s going to be my dog, she needs to like the sea,'” he expressed.

What followed is an inspiring journey of overcoming fears and pushing boundaries, as Bjorn Schembri and Misa embarked on a remarkable adventure that has not only transformed Misa’s relationship with water but has also garnered attention for potentially breaking the canine diving record. This heartwarming narrative showcases the power of patience, dedication, and the unbreakable bond between a human and his canine companion.

The newfound bond between the dog owner and his pup blossomed as they engaged in playful activities near the water’s edge. Recognizing the pup’s initial fear of water, the owner, Bjorn Schembri, took a patient approach, allowing the canine companion to slowly become more familiar with the aquatic environment.

As days turned into weeks, Schembri continued the gentle exposure, creating positive associations with the sea. Their playtime evolved into seaside adventures on the rocks, where toys were tossed into the waves, and the eager pup joyfully retrieved them, building confidence with each successful splash.

The transition from fear to enthusiasm marked a significant milestone in their journey. The pup, once apprehensive about the sea, now reveled in the water, showcasing an inspiring transformation. This gradual process not only strengthened the bond between owner and pup but also reflected the power of patience and positive reinforcement in overcoming fears.

Bjorn Schembri’s dedication to helping his furry friend conquer her aquatic anxiety not only shaped their shared experiences but also laid the foundation for an enduring companionship filled with seaside joy and adventure.

From an initial fear of water, Misa has transformed into a scuba sensation, rewriting records in the mesmerizing depths.
Schembri keenly noticed her apprehension towards water and skillfully guided her to conquer it through ongoing seaside adventures.

In a whimsical moment, she decided to add a playful twist to our interactions. It was a seemingly insignificant act – dropping a stone into a diminutive puddle. Yet, her commitment to our shared amusement led her to dive headfirst into the challenge, retrieving the stone with an unexpected determination. The puddle, a mere 20 centimeters in width, became the unlikely stage for her burgeoning aquatic prowess.

From that peculiar instance, a pattern emerged. I, intrigued by her newfound aquatic courage, devised a series of playful trials. Each time, the puddles grew deeper, and with each increment, Misa fearlessly embraced the challenge, retrieving the submerged stones with an ever-increasing sense of accomplishment.

As the ritual unfolded, Misa’s once hesitant relationship with water evolved into a confident dance with liquid depths. It was no longer just about stones in puddles; it became a metaphorical exploration of her expanding comfort zone. Undeterred, she took charge, navigating the challenges with a spirit of curiosity and determination. The water, once a source of apprehension, transformed into a canvas for her adventurous spirit to paint its vibrant strokes.

The once water-wary dog now adores it, effortlessly diving 15 feet underwater to fetch her toys.

“Misa, once fearful of water, now joyfully leaps into the sea, conquering deeper depths year after year,” shared Schembri.

“As she approaches five years, it’s been half a decade of happiness. She’s not just overcome her fear; she’s broken the dog scuba diving record, claiming nearly 15 feet underwater.”

Proud of her achievements, Schembri envisions recognition for Misa’s deep-sea dives. Despite criticism, he assures she’s safe, healthy, and willingly embracing her aquatic adventures.

“She loves it, and at the beach, she becomes a star attraction. No coercion; just a happy dog diving into the waves, captivating everyone who gathers to witness her aquatic prowess.”
