Bronx Zoo Welcomes Adorable Baby Silvered Langur
NEW YORK (AP) โ The Bronx Zoo has a playful new additionโan energetic baby silvered langur whoโs bringing a bright splash of color to winter.
Born in November, the male infant recently made his public debut, joining a group of adult langurs at the zooโs JungleWorld exhibit. Unlike his silver-gray elders, the tiny monkey sports a striking orange coat, a color that will gradually fade to gray over the next three to five months.
A Rare and Vulnerable Species
Formally known as Trachypithecus cristatus, silvered langurs are native to forests in Brunei, Indonesia, and Malaysia. The species is classified as โvulnerableโ by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), meaning it faces a high risk of becoming endangered.
The Bronx Zoo has been actively involved in their conservation, successfully breeding over 100 silvered langurs in the past 40 years.
A Playful New Arrival
Photos and videos from the zoo show the tiny primate snuggling with adults, clambering over them, and confidently exploring his surroundings. His bright tangerine fur makes him easy to spot among the silvered coats of his family.
The little langur has yet to be named, but visitors can catch a glimpse of him at the JungleWorld exhibit.
