A duck that endured a distressing incident has been safely secured by RSPCA officers for necessary treatment. Witnesses observed the wild animal being shot in the face with an air gun along Caldon Canal in Hanley Park, Stoke-on-Trent, on April 2nd.

Despite the harrowing attack, the duck managed to survive but suffered a significant head wound. RSPCA officers promptly responded to the incident and commenced efforts to capture the injured bird.

After persistent attempts, the duck was successfully rescued on April 11th by officers utilizing a boat. It was accompanied by another duck, with which it had formed a bond, and both were transported to Stapeley Grange Wildlife Centre in Nantwich for further care.

RSPCA Inspector Mick Darling reported that the duck’s wound had become infected, necessitating treatment with antibiotics. Fortunately, the duck is currently responding well to treatment and is expected to be rehomed once it has fully recovered.

Mr. Darling expressed his dismay, stating, “This simply should not have happened, but unfortunately, attacks like this are not uncommon.” He highlighted the vulnerability of wildlife to such incidents, emphasizing that they lack protection when out in the open.

In response to the concerning frequency of these events, the RSPCA is advocating for stricter controls on air guns. This includes implementing basic safety training for buyers before they are permitted to purchase such weapons. These measures aim to mitigate the risk of similar incidents occurring in the future and to safeguard the well-being of wildlife populations.
