He was struggling 😟

When a Maryland resident spotted a young deer wandering through their yard with a blue Halloween candy bucket stuck on his head, they knew something was terribly wrong. Unsure what to do, they sent a photo to local animal rescuer Bob Swensen, hoping he could help.

At first, Bob couldn’t believe what he was seeing.

β€œI thought it had to be a joke β€” maybe someone Photoshopped it β€” but it was real,” he said.

Once he confirmed the photo was genuine, Bob and his rescue partner Bernie Hilditch, from Lost Animal Resource Group and First Response Drone Pet Search and Rescue, jumped into action. They’d rescued countless animals before β€” but never a deer. Still, they were determined to save him.

Tracking β€œBucket Boy”

Using drone technology, Bernie began searching for the deer, who was quickly nicknamed β€œBucket Boy.” He discovered that the young buck stayed close to a small herd β€” his mother and siblings β€” but that the plastic bucket made eating and drinking impossible.

For several days, the rescuers worked tirelessly to locate and help the trapped animal. To their surprise, the entire community got involved. Neighbors shared sightings, offered help, and rallied behind the effort to save the struggling deer.

β€œEverybody was asking how they could help,” Bob said. β€œThe whole neighborhood came together.”

Hope Fades β€” Then a Miracle

Nearly a week passed, and each rescue attempt failed. Every time they approached, the frightened deer would bolt deeper into the woods. Bob and Bernie started to fear the worst β€” that the deer wouldn’t survive much longer without food or water.

Then, something incredible happened. While scanning the area again, Bernie spotted the same group of deer β€” and instantly recognized Bucket Boy among them. But this time, the bucket was gone.

β€œSame markings, same family, everything,” Bernie said. β€œOnly now, the bucket was completely gone.”

No one knows exactly how the deer got free β€” whether he managed to dislodge it himself or someone nearby stepped in β€” but that didn’t matter. What mattered was that the young deer was finally safe.

A Touching Reunion

When Bernie observed the deer again, he noticed something beautiful.

β€œHis mom was licking every spot where the bucket had rubbed against his face and neck,” he said. β€œIt was like she was comforting him.”

The rescuers were overwhelmed with relief β€” and deeply moved by how the entire community had come together to help one struggling wild animal.

β€œIn a world that can feel so cruel, seeing everyone unite to save a deer with a bucket on his head was truly heartwarming,” Bernie said.
