Curtis McIff, now retired, enjoys filling his days in the garage workshop at his home, crafting projects with his hands. He first built a pair of Adirondack chairs for himself and his wife, then decided to make tiny matching versions for their cats. That simple idea soon sparked something even more special.
McIff volunteers at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab, Utah, and while working on the miniature chairs for his own pets, he found himself thinking about the cats at the shelter. He realized many of them could use more warm, inviting places to rest, and he knew exactly how he could help.
So he got to work.
He built the first six cat-sized Adirondack chairs by hand, painting each one in a cheerful, vibrant color. Once they were finished, he brought them to the sanctuary as a surprise for the feline residents.
The tiny chairs were placed in several rooms inside Cat World, the part of the sanctuary that cares for hundreds of cats. At first, the residents approached them with curiosity, cautiously sniffing and inspecting the new additions. But it did not take long for the chairs to become a favorite. Soon, cats were stretching out in them, soaking up the sun, and claiming them as their own cozy little thrones.
Their popularity spread quickly.
Before long, staff throughout Cat World began requesting more chairs for the cats in their care. The handmade furniture had become such a hit that demand kept growing. One staff member even asked whether McIff could create something new — a cat-sized daybed. Without hesitation, he returned home and figured out how to make that, too.
Since then, McIff has crafted 40 miniature chairs and 10 daybeds for the sanctuary’s cats. His thoughtful creations have added comfort, charm, and a sense of home to shelter life, giving the cats peaceful places to relax while they wait for families of their own.
For McIff, seeing the cats enjoy his work is deeply rewarding. Watching them bask in the sunlight while curled up in one of his handmade chairs brings him genuine happiness.
His kindness is also a reminder of how important volunteers are to places like Best Friends Animal Sanctuary. Through his creativity and generosity, McIff has shown that even a small idea can make a big difference in the lives of animals waiting for love.
