Amanda Knight was walking her dog in her New Orleans neighborhood when she noticed another dog sprinting past her. Initially assuming it belonged to a neighbor, she soon realized something was amissβthe dog seemed lost and frightened, in need of help.
βHe was alone and absolutely terrified,β Knight recounted.
A neighbor informed Knight that the dogβs owner had recently passed away, and instead of taking him to a shelter, the family had abandoned him.
Knight attempted to coax the dog into her home, but he became spooked just as he was about to enter. Recognizing that gaining his trust would be a challenge she couldn’t face alone, Knight turned to her community for support.
βWe all came together, leaving fresh water and food out for him. It was heartwarming to see,β Knight shared.
Determined to earn the dog’s trust, Knight spent time sitting with him daily while he ate. However, he would always dart away once he finished, earning him the name Houdini for his evasive skills.
After what felt like an eternity, Houdini finally allowed Knight to leash him one day.
βI said, βLetβs go home!β and he let me do it. It was incredible,β Knight recalled.
Houdini’s transformation was swift and profound. The once-sad eyes now radiated joy and relief at finding safety and love again.
βThe change in his eyes was remarkableβfrom sadness to hope,β Knight remarked.
Now under the care of a foster mom, Houdini is thriving. Knight confessed that if the foster mom decides not to adopt him, she will gladly welcome him into her home, unable to resist his hopeful gaze.
