Abandoned Dog Waits for Family to Return — Rescued by Happy Tails Animal Rescue
One Saturday, Taylor Bullock, founder of Happy Tails Animal Rescue, was scrolling through local missing pets pages when a post caught her eye. A black-and-white dog had been spotted sitting on the porch of an empty house, seemingly waiting for her family to return. But the days had passed, and no one had come for her.
“I kept refreshing for hours, hoping someone would claim her,” Bullock said. “As the clouds rolled in, I knew I had to drive by and check if she was still there.”
When Bullock arrived at the house, the dog was still patiently sitting on the porch, just as described in the photos. The pup, later named Rain, was ready to make a new friend.
“She’s such a sweet dog,” Bullock shared. “She would cry and try to sit on my lap while I was on the porch with her.”
The Heartbreaking Truth Behind Rain’s Vigil
As Bullock and fellow animal advocate Paula Ellis spoke to neighbors, they learned that the family who had lived in the house had moved out a month ago. Rain had been left alone, waiting in vain for a family that would never return.
Despite her loneliness, Rain wasn’t interested in food or affection — she was focused solely on the front door, as if trying to get back inside her old home.
“She kept walking to the door, jumping at the handle as if she had done this many times before,” Bullock said. “It was heartbreaking.”
A Stormy Night Rescue
With the weather taking a turn for the worse and no one else stepping up to claim Rain, Bullock knew she couldn’t leave her there. She carefully bundled the scared dog into her car and drove her home. That night, as a storm raged outside, Bullock gave Rain a bath, dewormed her, and started her vaccinations.
“She was so dirty, with sores on her paws, legs, and back,” Bullock recalled. “She had massive separation anxiety. I made sure all the other animals in the home were settled, and then Rain and I laid on the couch together all night.”
Rain initially struggled to calm down, panting and restless. But by the end of the night, she had relaxed and sprawled out on her back, finally feeling safe.
Rain’s New Beginning
Now, after a few weeks in foster care, Rain is adjusting to her new routine. She still suffers from separation anxiety, a painful reminder of the time she was abandoned, but she is slowly healing and learning to trust again.
“Rain is a happy girl who loves people and animals,” Bullock said. “She needs a family who will spend time with her and shower her with love.”
Rain is now ready for her forever home — a place where she will be cherished for her loyalty and sweet nature.
