Last year, Elaine Buckner and her fiancΓ© observed the determined efforts of an industrious yet misguided robin in their backyard.
The robin had selected a section of their downspout, tucked beneath the roof’s awning, as the ideal spot to construct a nest. However, despite her persistence, all the sticks and twigs she gathered would simply slide off to the ground.
“It was quite heartbreaking,” Buckner shared. “She was putting in so much effort to build her nest, only to have her materials fall and have to start over again and again.”
Unfortunately, the robin had to abandon her nest-building endeavor that year. Yet, undeterred by her previous setback, she returned the following year, determined to try again.
Observing the robin’s relentless efforts, Buckner and her fiancΓ© decided to intervene creatively.
Upon her absence, they affixed a small, plastic basket, reminiscent of those used for serving french fries, to the challenging nesting spot. This makeshift nest proved to be a welcome solution for the persistent robin.
“The next morning, the basket was filled with nesting material,” Buckner recalled with joy. “Seeing her finally settled in a nest brought me immense happiness. It’s truly a prime location.”
The fortunate robin had been striving to build a home, and Buckner and her fiancΓ© provided her with the means to do so.
Now equipped with a suitable nest, the robin has all she needs to start a new family. Buckner remains optimistic about the robin’s prospects this year, anticipating that the bird will experience much greater success in welcoming her little ones into the world within her newly crafted nest.
“We are thrilled and wish her the best of luck!” Buckner exclaimed. “She’s been spending most of her time in the nest today. I can’t help but wonder if there are already eggs!”
