“They had to pry him off of me …”
During a family vacation in Muskoka, Ontario, Fiona Begg set out for what she thought would be a peaceful morning walk. Instead, she found herself in the middle of a life-or-death rescue she’ll never forget.
As she strolled along the roadside, a gray cat appeared, locking eyes with her before disappearing from view. Seconds later, Fiona heard a sound that froze her in place.
“It was the most gut-wrenching cry,” she said. The cat had been struck by a passing truck and was lying helpless in the road as cars continued to approach.

Without thinking twice, Fiona ran into the street, stopped traffic, and scooped the injured cat into her arms.
“I didn’t even know if he was alive, but I couldn’t let him be hit again,” she said. “When I held him, he clung to my shoulder like he was holding on for dear life. That moment will never leave me.”
Cradling the fragile cat against her chest, Fiona rushed to the nearest vet clinic, terrified he wouldn’t survive the trip. By the time they arrived, the bleeding, trembling animal was gripping her tighter than ever.
“They had to pry him off me when I handed him over,” Fiona recalled.
The veterinary team began emergency treatment, but his chances looked slim. Fiona left the clinic heartbroken, certain she had only provided comfort in his final moments.

Then, four days later, came an unexpected call: the cat had survived — and needed a forever home.
“When I got the call, it felt like a miracle,” Fiona said. “Something told me instantly that this boy was meant to be mine.” She rushed back to the clinic and adopted him on the spot, naming him Lucky Chance.
Though she’d always considered herself a dog person, Lucky Chance changed everything. He settled in quickly, forging a fast friendship with her dog, Link. Together, the trio now share every adventure — from hiking trails to cozy nights at home.
“The best things in life come when you least expect them,” Fiona said. “Lucky Chance wasn’t part of the plan, but he’s exactly where he belongs. He’s the most beautiful part of our family.”
