Spring Arrives in the East of England

A Burst of Colour and Warmth

As the East of England ushers in the first day of astronomical springโ€”also known as the vernal equinoxโ€”flowers are bursting into vibrant colours, marking the official start of the season.

Rising Temperatures

With warmer air moving in, BBC Weather forecasters predict temperatures will climb into the mid-to-high teens, with areas like Cambridge, Bedford, and Northampton reaching 18ยฐC (64ยฐF).

This week, temperatures will be up to seven degrees above the March average, providing a taste of early spring warmth. However, the highest March temperature on record remains 25.6ยฐC, which was recorded in Mepal, Cambridgeshire, back in 1968.

Record Spring Equinox Temperatures

For the warmest Spring Equinox on record, Cambridge Botanic Gardens reached 21.5ยฐC on 20 March 1972โ€”a day still celebrated in the region’s weather history.
