Spring Arrives in the East of England

A Burst of Colour and Warmth

As the East of England ushers in the first day of astronomical springβ€”also known as the vernal equinoxβ€”flowers are bursting into vibrant colours, marking the official start of the season.

Rising Temperatures

With warmer air moving in, BBC Weather forecasters predict temperatures will climb into the mid-to-high teens, with areas like Cambridge, Bedford, and Northampton reaching 18Β°C (64Β°F).

This week, temperatures will be up to seven degrees above the March average, providing a taste of early spring warmth. However, the highest March temperature on record remains 25.6Β°C, which was recorded in Mepal, Cambridgeshire, back in 1968.

Record Spring Equinox Temperatures

For the warmest Spring Equinox on record, Cambridge Botanic Gardens reached 21.5Β°C on 20 March 1972β€”a day still celebrated in the region’s weather history.
