He’d been trying to escape for days πŸ’”

About three years ago in Orangeburg, South Carolina, a homeowner was shocked to hear frantic barking and whining coming from an open septic tank on their property. Rushing to investigate, they discovered a small, terrified dog struggling to keep his head above the filthy water.

The homeowner immediately called local animal control. Responders arrived quickly, rescued the dog from the dangerous pit, and brought him to the Orangeburg Animal Shelter. That same day, shelter staff shared his story online, hoping someone could help.

When Labor of Love Transport Rescue saw the post, they knew they couldn’t ignore him. They arranged for the dog to be transferred into a foster home, where he could start healing.

The pup was named Andy Dufresne, after the resilient hero of The Shawshank Redemption. His new caregivers gave him several baths to remove the septic water and help him feel clean and comfortable again.

Andrea Roubal, Andy’s foster mom, immediately noticed that the dog needed time and space to recover.

β€œHe knew he was safe the moment he walked into our home,” Roubal told The Dodo. β€œYou could see the relief on him as he ate and then slept for hours, only waking briefly for food and potty breaks.”

As Andy regained strength, his true personality began to emerge.

β€œSlowly, the sweet, playful, and charming Andy we know today came through, replacing the exhausted and frightened little boy we first met,” Roubal explained.

Once he was ready, Andy began looking for a permanent family. When his future mom saw his picture on the rescue website, she instantly knew he was the one.

β€œIt was love at first sight,” she said.

A few months later, the family adopted another dog, Ellis, who quickly became Andy’s best friend. With Ellis by his side and consistent training, Andy’s confidence flourished. He even became a regular visitor at the local nursing home, where he sits calmly, takes treats gently, and enjoys being petted by the residents β€” bringing joy to everyone he meets.

Three years after his rescue, Roubal still marvels at Andy’s resilience and transformation.

β€œAndy could have given up and let fate decide, but he fought to survive,” she said. β€œHis courage and determination are inspiring reminders of what we can achieve when we refuse to quit.”
