After 11 Years in a Shelter, Monty the Dog Is Still Hoping for a Forever Home
At the Kathleen C. Cailloux Humane Society of Kerrville (KCHS), the staff members love seeing their animals find forever homes. But there’s one dog who has been waiting far too long—Montgomery (Monty), their longest resident.
Monty first arrived at the shelter as a young puppy in 2014, alongside his brother and best friend, Phoenix. The two spent their days playing, splashing in the pool, and rolling in the grass, making the most of shelter life. Phoenix eventually found a loving home, and Monty did too—only to be returned two years later.
By then, Phoenix was gone, and Monty’s once-playful energy had faded. He had grown timid, unsure of the world outside the shelter walls. Yet, despite his shyness, the staff at KCHS never lost hope.
“Although he is a little shy at first, once he gets to know you, he will be your best friend and loyal companion,” the shelter wrote on Facebook.
Now, nearly seven years after his return, Monty is still waiting. His black fur has turned speckled with gray, marking the long years he has spent in the shelter. While he still enjoys daily walks and playing dress-up in sweaters and pajamas, his anxiety around other animals has made it harder for him to find a home.
“He has never had [other] friends here at the shelter,” KCHS director Makenzie told The Dodo. Yet, despite his loneliness, Monty remains a sweet and affectionate dog, always ready to give love to anyone who stops by his kennel.
Monty needs a quiet home without other animals or young children—just a cozy couch and a kind heart to love him in his golden years.
“Monty may be old in years, but he is still a puppy at heart,” Makenzie said. “He is in very good health for being 11 years old and has quite a few years left in him.”
