“She was, like, the most friendly dog ever.”

Zully Vasquez Ventura felt her stomach drop the moment she turned onto the dusty road she knows all too well — a stretch locals grimly refer to as the dumping grounds of her Cleveland, Texas, community.

She had barely driven a few feet when she saw her: a skeletal dog standing weakly in the middle of the road. Zully slammed on the brakes, jumped from her car, and ran toward her.

Too Weak to Stand

The dog could only take a few steps before collapsing to the ground.

“She was really, really weak,” Ventura told The Dodo. “She would walk five or six steps, and she would hit the ground because she was not strong enough to walk. She had no food, no water, not even shelter from the sun.”

The area, known as Colony Ridge, sits about an hour northeast of Houston and is notorious for its large number of abandoned and neglected dogs. Zully has rescued countless animals there — but this one broke her in a way none ever had before.

A Friendly Heart in a Broken Body

Despite her shocking condition, the dog greeted Zully with a wagging tail and gentle eyes.

“She was the most friendly dog ever,” Ventura said. “It was like a stab in the heart thinking how this even happened to her.”

The sight overwhelmed her. Zully dropped to her knees in the middle of the road, crying.

“I called my husband and said, ‘I don’t know why I keep coming to these streets. I know what I’m going to find. There has to be something wrong with me,’” she said.

Her husband gently reminded her why she was there.

“He said, ‘If it’s in your hands to help, then that’s exactly where you’re supposed to be.’”

Help Arrives Within Minutes

With renewed determination, Zully posted a video of the dog on social media. Within 20 minutes, someone answered the call.

Diann Thomason from Three Little Pitties Rescue saw the video and immediately sprang into action.

“When I saw Zully crying and then saw the dog, I thought, ‘I’ve got to get this dog,’” Thomason said. “It was heartbreaking.”

She rushed to pick the dog up. When they met, the frail pup leaned in and gave her a kiss.

Thomason named her Tabitha and drove her straight to the rescue’s medical clinic.

A Fight for Survival

At the clinic, Tabitha’s condition was even more devastating than expected. She was severely malnourished and suffering from advanced mange.

“I thought she was going to die,” Thomason said. “She was all bones and barely had any fur, but her tail never stopped wagging.”

“I could feel every bone in her body,” she added. “My neighbor said she was the most pitiful-looking dog she’d ever seen.”

But Tabitha wasn’t ready to give up.

From Broken to Beautiful

With steady medical care, nutritious food, and endless love, Tabitha slowly transformed. Her fur grew back, her strength returned, and her joyful personality finally had room to shine.

“Seeing her fur come back was amazing,” Thomason said. “She became a completely different dog.”

Soon, Three Little Pitties Rescue posted Tabitha for adoption.

A Journey to Forever

A family in Vancouver applied — and they were the perfect match. There was just one challenge: Tabitha was afraid of cars and crates.

So Thomason did something extraordinary. She drove Tabitha all the way from Texas to Washington state herself.

When Tabitha met her adopter, the connection was instant.

“She had a full-body wag,” Thomason said. “She just ran right up to her. It was perfect.”

Proof That Hope Exists

When Zully saw the video of Tabitha meeting her new family, she cried again — but this time, with joy.

“This reminds me there is hope,” she said. “God put me here for a reason: to help these dogs. Seeing her go to a new family makes everything worth it.”

From a dusty road in Texas to a loving home across the country, Tabitha’s journey proves that even the most broken souls can find healing — when someone chooses to stop and care.
