“I think it’s amazing …”
For the last three years, Alisson Viana has shared his world with Otto, his loyal and protective canine companion. Living in Brazil, Otto enjoys spending his time in the fenced-in front yard, where he keeps a sharp eye on everything happening in the neighborhood.
Though not aggressive, Otto proudly acts as the local watchdog — always quick to react when people or other animals pass by.
“He’s not fond of strangers,” Viana told The Dodo. “He’s not violent, but he’s very reactive, especially to loud noises. Most of the time, he just sits quietly and watches everything.”
While Otto may come off as tough, Viana knows his dog has a softer side — a side that, surprisingly, someone else managed to uncover.

One day, as Viana reviewed footage from his home’s security camera, he noticed something unexpected. There, on the screen, was Otto calmly standing by the fence — letting a young girl from the neighborhood gently pet him. Viana was shocked.
“He never lets anyone touch him when I’m not around,” he said. “But somehow, she managed to break through that barrier.”

Though Viana has never spoken directly to the girl, he did chat with her parents and learned how their sweet bond began.
“Initially, she was hesitant and a little scared of Otto,” he said. “But eventually, she noticed him wagging his tail and realized he was comfortable with her. From there, their friendship just grew.”
What started as a cautious interaction has blossomed into a quiet and beautiful connection. Otto, who already receives plenty of love from Viana at home, now has a friend in the neighborhood who sees the gentle soul beneath his watchful bark.
“I think it’s wonderful,” Viana said. “It’s comforting to know that there are kind-hearted people nearby who not only appreciate animals but also know how to connect with them.”
