“She thinks of them as her babies” ❤️

Louro the Parrot: A Feathered Hero with a Heart of Gold

Fourteen years ago, while walking through a forested area near their home in Brazil, farmer Josemar Milli and his wife spotted something unusual—a fallen tree had left two tiny baby parrots stranded on the forest floor.

Moved by compassion, the couple rescued the chicks and brought them home. Their simple act of kindness would go on to shape more than just the birds’ lives.

The parrots thrived under their care, and when they reached maturity, one flew off into the wild, never to return. But the other—named Louro—chose a different path.

“She was never caged,” said Milli. “She just never wanted to leave.”

Louro became a part of the family. Free to come and go, she always returned to her favorite spot—perched on Milli’s shoulder.

But recently, Louro’s routine changed. For three nights in a row, she didn’t come home. And during the day, she stayed close to a wooden fencepost she’d once used as a makeshift nest.

Concerned, Milli decided to investigate.

To his surprise, inside the hollow post, Louro had found—and seemingly adopted—a litter of three newborn kittens.

Milli believes a neighborhood cat had given birth there, only to abandon them. Left alone, the kittens might not have survived. But Louro, sensing their vulnerability, kept watch—and alerted the humans who once saved her.

“I think she sees them as her babies,” Milli said.

After trying, unsuccessfully, to reunite the kittens with their birth mother, the family took over their care. Louro stayed close, still devoted.

The kittens were welcomed by the entire Milli family— including their household cat, who stepped in to help.

“We brought them home and are taking care of them,” said Milli. “My daughters will be keeping them.”

Thanks to Louro’s loyalty and love, three tiny lives were saved.

For a parrot who was once rescued and raised by an unlikely family, it’s fitting that she’d grow up to extend that same compassion—across species.

Louro has always been free. But with that freedom, she chose love. And in doing so, became not just a survivor—but a gentle savior.
