Polar, a mostly-white terrier mix, has become an unlikely star in the Amazonian jungle, thanks to his striking white fur. He lives in the lowland jungle of Madre de Dios, Peru, with his parents, TikTok user @abychan12 (Abichan), and his fur brother, Calvin. The trio loves to hike through the jungle, surrounded by its diverse wildlife. But for Polar, each adventure brings an amusing and sometimes overwhelming experience — he’s constantly swarmed by monarch butterflies.

As soon as the butterflies spot Polar’s white fur through the trees, they’re drawn to him. The butterflies swarm his body, covering his back and neck in a flurry of orange wings. For a few brief moments, Polar becomes a living canvas of butterflies, creating an unusual and beautiful sight. Despite the enchantment of the scene, Polar isn’t thrilled by his new winged friends. He shakes them off and continues his hike, only to have them return minutes later.

When Abichan shared a TikTok video of this phenomenon, one commenter, @karlysol3 (Karly Sol), suggested a possible reason for the butterflies’ attraction: “Butterflies perch on white surfaces,” the commenter explained, noting that wearing white in areas where monarch butterflies gather, like Michoacán, Mexico, can draw them in. Abichan confirmed this theory, pointing out that Calvin, who has brown fur, was never swarmed by butterflies, but Polar, with his white coat, was always the center of attention.

Though it can be a bit much for Polar, he’s become affectionately known as “the guardian of the butterflies.” Despite the swarm of butterflies being a constant feature of his jungle hikes, Polar seems to share a special bond with the insects, creating a one-of-a-kind hiking experience in the heart of the Amazon.
