She’d recognize those brows anywhere

Signs from Remington: A Soul Dog’s Love Lives On

There’s nothing quite like the bond between a human and their soul dog. For Jennifer Starr, that soul dog was a miniature schnauzer named Remington — a loyal companion who shared 15 unforgettable years of adventures, cuddles, and love.

Jennifer first welcomed Remington into her life in 2009 as a bouncy, wide-eyed 3-month-old pup. At the time, she was a young adult navigating the excitement and uncertainty of first-time pet parenthood. But from the moment they met, Remington made everything easier. He quickly became not just her dog, but her muse, her model, and her heartbeat.

“He was a perfectly poised model and the reason I continued to pick up my camera and improve my skills every day,” Jennifer shared. “Remington was 100 percent my soul dog.”

With his salt-and-pepper coat and trademark white eyebrows, Remington left a mark on everyone he met. But it was his deep connection with Jennifer — and his unwavering loyalty to the entire family, including two human siblings — that made him unforgettable.

Sadly, on May 25, 2024, Remington passed away. The grief was immeasurable. Jennifer feared the bond they shared might fade with his absence. But then, the signs began to appear.

Two weeks later, Jennifer discovered a birds’ nest in her yard. One baby cowbird had become trapped in a wagon grate. Instinctively, she stepped in to help, gently lifting the tiny creature to safety. That’s when she noticed something remarkable.

“He had these little white markings above his eyes — just like Remington’s eyebrows,” Jennifer recalled.

In a moment that felt touched by something beyond chance, Jennifer sensed that Remington had sent a message through this tiny bird. She called it “soulmating so hard,” and it wasn’t the only sign. The day Remington died, Jennifer’s family found a heart-shaped rock on a trail in Branson. When she later looked at a photo of it, she saw what appeared to be the profile of a schnauzer nestled into the corner of the stone.

“Of course, I took a photo because that’s what I do,” she laughed softly. “But I didn’t notice the schnauzer silhouette until days later. It was like Remington’s way of saying, ‘I’m still here.’”

Jennifer nurtured the baby bird for several days, watching over him like Remington once watched over her. Eventually, he flew away — another gentle reminder that love can come and go, but it always leaves its mark.

Not long after, another small miracle arrived: a new miniature schnauzer puppy named Grady. And in a moment of serendipity that still gives Jennifer chills, Grady was born on May 26, 2024 — just one day after Remington passed.

“Grady healed my heart in ways I wasn’t expecting,” Jennifer said. “He somehow feels like Remi and brings me so much peace and comfort.”

Though Remington is no longer physically at her side, his presence remains constant — in Grady’s gaze, in a heart-shaped rock, in the face of a baby bird with white eyebrows.

“I look at them every single day and think of Remington,” Jennifer said. “I’m so thankful for signs from my boy.”

In the quiet moments and the little details, Jennifer still feels the love of her soul dog — a bond unbroken by time, distance, or even death.
