“You must be joking…”

Casey Bard was thrilled at the thought of celebrating his twins’ 10th birthday last week. Upon returning home with gifts in hand, his excitement peaked when he spotted an unexpected sight at his front door: a crimson Edible Arrangements bag.

Knowing his children would adore the sweet surprise, a thoughtful gesture from a family friend, Bard approached the package. Yet, a nagging sense of apprehension began to gnaw at him as he drew nearer.

“I peeked inside to see our surprise, and it seems someone beat us to our cupcakes,” Bard recounted in a TikTok video. “We’re short one.”

Within the bag, Bard discovered a tray meant to hold four delightful confetti cupcakes. However, the lid sat slightly askew, revealing the absence of one cupcake from the set.

Bard was incredulous that someone had tampered with the gift. Scanning his surroundings for clues, he grew increasingly suspicious upon spotting small footprints etched in the snow covering his front yard.

Following the tiny tracks, Bard’s investigation led him to a towering tree mere steps away, where the trail abruptly ended. Casting his eyes upward, he was met with an unexpected sight: a plump squirrel perched on a branch, clutching the pilfered cupcake in its tiny paws.

“I couldn’t believe it,” Bard said on TikTok. “A squirrel in our yard was eating a cupcake in the tree.”

The squirrel looked quite pleased, munching happily. It was a regular in our Webster, New York, neighborhood, but it had never found such a tasty treat before.

The Bard family’s birthday celebration was a whirlwind of laughter, games, and the sweet taste of cupcakes. A few days later, following the unexpected fame of Bard’s TikTok, a surprise arrived at their doorstep: another batch of delectable cupcakes from Edible Arrangements.

While they cherished the gesture, the Bards contemplated a unique way to pay it forward.

“Perhaps we should leave these out as a token of gratitude for the laughter they brought,” Bard mused. “Instead of enjoying them ourselves, let’s share the joy and capture the moment on camera.”

The squirrel never came back for the second cupcakes, but he still enjoys meals on the Bards’ lawn. From his tree perch, he munches in peace, keeping an eye on the house for more treats.

“Mr. Squirrel is fine, but he’s watching our doorstep,” Bard shared.
