Boone and Rellie collectively spent more than 450 days at a shelter operated by a humane society in South Carolina.
One was deaf, while the other was timid. However, a potential adopter, who had been following their journey on social media, felt it was time to change their fateβboth deserved a loving forever home.
Rellie, known for her sweetness towards other dogs but reserved around people, had been waiting for adoption at the Greenville Humane Society for 10 months. The last four of those months were spent snuggled up with a newcomer named Boone.
Boone, another long-term resident, had a stay that lasted 150 days.
βHe was deaf, and finding a family willing to be patient and understanding with him was a challenge,β the shelter shared in a Facebook update.
βEvery day, Boone and Rellie took walks together at the shelter,β said Emily Zheng, the marketing manager for the Greenville Humane Society, as reported by The Herald. βThey played together daily in the playgroup and formed an incredible bond.β
Due to unforeseen circumstances, Boone’s previous owner could no longer care for him. In his earlier life, this large white dog with mismatched eyes had learned to communicate through sign language and relied on a vibrating collar to navigate his environment.
When Booneβs new family discovered Rellieβs story online, they felt compelled to visit her. The humane society informed them that Rellie would need to live with another dog. With space in both their home and hearts, they met Boone and instantly knew he was the perfect fit.
βThis serves as a powerful reminder of our mission: why we dedicate ourselves daily to the homeless animals in our community and why we never lose hope,β the society reflected in their Facebook post.
