Meet Eric and Florence, two black Labradors whoโ€™ve earned the titles of official staff members at Tewkesbury Abbey in Gloucestershire, despite being dogs.

The pair belong to Chris Skepper, the lay minister and head verger at the abbey. Their presence became a necessity when Chris was left alone to care for them after his wife and daughter were away for an extended period. Not wanting to leave Eric and โ€˜Floโ€™ at home for long stretches, Chris sought permission to bring them to work.

Now, like clockwork, the duo accompanies Chris to the abbey on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and twice a month on Sundays. Theyโ€™ve been affectionately dubbed โ€˜assistant vergersโ€™ and even wear name badges. More than just employees, theyโ€™ve taken on the role of therapy dogs, bringing comfort to staff and visitors alike.

โ€œPeople absolutely love them,โ€ said Chris. โ€œTheir presence has added a warm and positive energy to the abbey.โ€

Initially allowed in on a temporary basis, their good behavior and the positive reactions from staff and visitors made their stay permanent. Eric and Flo now follow Chris around as he tends to his duties. During services, the pair rests quietly on their mats in the side aisle.

On their working days, Chris often asks visitors at the door if theyโ€™d like to meet the dogs, who are 9 and 10 years old. The Labradors, whoโ€™ve been with Chris since puppyhood, are an inviting presence for those unfamiliar with the church.

โ€œIf youโ€™re used to the church, you forget how intimidating it can be for newcomers. The big doors and unfamiliar setting can be daunting. But when they come in and see the dogs, it instantly makes the place feel more welcoming,โ€ Chris explained. โ€œEven if they donโ€™t interact with the dogs, it still brings a smile to their faces.โ€

For those who do interact with Eric and Flo, their well-trained behavior shines through. โ€œLabradors are bred to workโ€”they love having a purpose. As long as they know whatโ€™s expected, theyโ€™ll follow commands perfectly,โ€ Chris said.

As verger, Chris is responsible for the behind-the-scenes tasks at the abbey, such as preparing for services, setting up seating, and maintaining the property. Eric and Flo, it seems, have adapted brilliantly to their new roles.

โ€œWhen I bring them to work, they hop out of the car, I put their lanyards on, and you can see their tails waggingโ€”they know theyโ€™re here to do a job!โ€
