A zoo has celebrated the birth of Arctic fox cubs for the first time. Last week, eight cubs, also known as kits, were seen emerging from an underground burrow at Dudley Zoo. Sam Grove, the leader of the carnivore section, described the arrival of the approximately six-week-old cubs as “extra special.”

“We’re thrilled to see the cubs out and about exploring the habitat,” he said. According to the zoo, parents Grace, aged two, and Spruce, aged one, are doing “incredibly well,” with the father guarding the burrow entrance and bringing food to the mother.

Female Arctic foxes can give birth to up to 14 pups and may have two litters in a year. The babies initially have a dark velvety coat. Arctic foxes live in burrows and can survive up to six years in the wild. They were reintroduced to the zoo in 2019.
