A fire service came to the rescue of a juvenile fox that had become trapped between a garden shed and a fence.

The RSPCA was called to a property in Luton on 1 July to assist the distressed animal.

Animal rescue officer Mark Richardson initially attempted to free the fox by coating it in sunflower oil and gently easing it out of the gap. However, the tight space made the risk of injuring the fox too high.

He then called on Stopsley Community Fire Station for assistance. Using hydraulic tools, the firefighters were able to widen the gap, allowing Richardson to safely remove the fox. The animal was treated for groin injuries at South Essex Wildlife Hospital and, after a month of rehabilitation, was released back into the wild.

Richardson said: “The best part of the job is seeing an animal you’ve rescued recover and return to the wild. After a month of care and a four-hour round trip, the fox didn’t hang around to say thank you, quickly disappearing into the bushes. This was a wonderful, happy ending to a team effort.”
