“May I enlist Dr. Max’s expertise as my academic guide?” Every year, universities across the globe bestow honorary doctorate degrees upon individuals who epitomize excellence in their fields. Past recipients from diverse institutions have ranged from iconic figures like Angela Bassett, Taylor Swift, to Michelle Yeoh.

Yet, in an unprecedented move, Vermont State University diverged from convention in selecting its honorary doctorate recipient for the year: none other than a cat named Max Dow. Max, a cherished resident in proximity to the Vermont State campus, has woven himself into the fabric of the school community, forging connections with students, faculty, and staff alike.

“For the past four years, Max has become an indelible presence on campus β€” perching on students’ backpacks, inspiring college photography classes, and serving as a steadfast source of emotional support for the entire campus community,” Vermont State announced in a post on their website.

As a testament to Max’s profound impact on the Vermont State community, the university’s board of trustees unanimously elected to elevate Max’s title from mere “Max the Cat” to the distinguished designation of “Max, Doctor of Litter-ature.”

Inscribed upon the diploma bestowed upon him reads: “With a resounding purr of approval from the faculty, the Board of Trustees of the Vermont State Cat-leges has bestowed upon Max Dow the prestigious title of Doctor of Litter-ature, complete with all the catnip perks, scratching post privileges, and litter box responsibilities that come with it.”

Now that Max has officially become Dr. Max, Vermont State students are buzzing with anticipation, eager to sign up for his classes.

“Can Dr. Max be my academic advisor?” one enthusiastic commenter posted on Instagram.

Alas, the degree is honorary, and Dr. Max won’t be taking on students in an academic capacity. Nevertheless, Vermont State emphasized that Dr. Max has a treasure trove of wisdom to share.

In a subsequent post on their website, Vermont State highlighted some of Dr. Max’s life lessons: “While nine lives are great, it’s best to savor every moment of the one life you have,” and “Find where the sun shines warm and take time to nap there.”
