For months, a fugitive dog known as Scrim has transfixed the city of New Orleans
In the heart of New Orleans, a scrappy terrier mix named Scrim has captured the cityβs imagination, eluding capture while roaming free through its streets. Weighing just 17 pounds, this feisty dog has become an unlikely folk hero, inspiring ballads, tattoos, and T-shirts, all while outsmarting a determined rescue team.
A Life of Defiance
Scrimβs journey began when he was rescued from a semi-feral existence at a trailer park and adopted from a shelter. But in April, the adventurous canine made his great escape, darting through the city until his brief capture in October. Despite being brought to safety, Scrim leaped from a second-story window weeks later in a daring bid for freedomβa moment immortalized in a viral video.
Since then, Scrim has become a symbol of resilience and independence, despite his rough condition. Rescuers found him battered and bruised, with matted fur and even projectiles embedded in his body. Though treated by a vet and placed in a loving environment, the call of the wild proved too strong for Scrim.
The Hunt for Scrim
Leading the charge to bring Scrim back is Michelle Cheramie, a passionate animal rescuer and founder of Zeusβ Rescues. With her network of volunteers, she has invested thousands in wildlife cameras, thermal sensors, and even tranquilizer training to track down the elusive dog.
The search has united the community, drawing people like Tammy Murray, who lost her furniture store and father, and now channels her energy into the hunt. Writer David W. Brown has even created a crowd-sourced map of Scrim sightings, turning the search into a citywide effort.
A Divided Public
While Cheramie and her team are committed to finding Scrim a safe home, not everyone agrees. The hashtag #FreeScrim has gained momentum, with supporters arguing that Scrim deserves the freedom he fights for. Cheramie, however, believes the streets are too dangerous for a dog like Scrim.
βWeβre all running from something or to something,β Cheramie said. βHeβs doing that too.β
Whatβs Next for Scrim?
Despite numerous close calls, Scrim remains at large, evading nets, traps, and tranquilizers with cunning and speed. His rescuers are rethinking their approach, envisioning a sanctuary where Scrim can roam freely but safely, surrounded by other dogs and plenty of space.
For now, Scrim continues to embody the spirit of New Orleansβresilient, unyielding, and a little wild. His story is a reminder of the cityβs vibrant character and the power of community to rally behind even the smallest of heroes.
