โ€œIt goes to show that dogs never forget.” For any pet parent, being separated from their beloved companion is heart-wrenching. Samantha, the owner of a pit bull named Loki, experienced this agony firsthand when she lost her dog for two long years.

Two years ago, Samantha went on a trip, leaving Loki in the care of a trusted friend. Unfortunately, Loki escaped and went missing. Despite her relentless efforts to find him, Loki remained lost, and Samantha eventually lost hope of ever being reunited with her furry friend.

But fate had other plans for them.

Last month, Loki was brought to Fort Wayne Animal Care & Control (FWACC) by a good Samaritan. Somehow, Loki had gotten separated from whoever had been looking after him. When FWACC scanned him for a microchip, they found one and quickly contacted Samantha.

โ€œWhen we called Samantha, she was unbelievably excited,โ€ Delaney Atkinson, FWACCโ€™s community outreach educator, shared with The Dodo. She was overjoyed and couldnโ€™t believe she would finally see Loki again. That same day, she rushed to FWACC for the long-awaited reunion.

According to Atkinson, Loki didnโ€™t immediately recognize his mom when he was brought out. He greeted the staff members first, but the moment Samantha called his name, Loki realized who she was.

โ€œIt goes to show that dogs never forget,โ€ Atkinson noted.

The instant Loki was back in Samanthaโ€™s arms, he transformed completely. He started jumping and wiggling around in pure excitement and joy. Everyone in the room was deeply moved by the emotional reunion.

โ€œWitnessing this beautiful moment, everyone was tearing up โ€ฆ the emotion from both Loki and Samantha was incredibly heartwarming,โ€ Atkinson said.

This story underscores an important message: โ€œPlease microchip your pet. Without his microchip, we wouldnโ€™t have had this happy ending,โ€ Atkinson emphasized.

She also highlighted the importance of keeping personal information updated once your pet is microchipped and reminded people to take lost pets to a vet or shelter to be scanned for a chip.

In the end, everything worked out for Loki, and he and Samantha joyfully headed home together.
