βI was actually going to stop and call the fire department.β
One evening last October, Brendan and Kayla Dunn were heading out for a walk with their dog, Cora, in their Philadelphia neighborhood when an unexpected visitor suddenly appeared.
A tiny stray kitten came running toward them from across the street, crying repeatedly as though she desperately wanted them to notice her.
βWhen we walked out our front door, she came running out from across the street, crying over and over,β Kayla said. βShe was skin and bones.β
The couple had never seen the kitten before, but it was immediately obvious that she needed help. She was extremely thin and seemed to be searching for someone who would stop and care for her.
Although she was nervous, the kitten was also curious. She slowly approached Kayla and eventually allowed her to pet her.
βShe was very skittish but seemed curious and eventually came close to me and let me pet her briefly,β Kayla said. βShe seemed friendly.β
Knowing the kitten was probably hungry, Brendan quickly went to a nearby Walgreens and returned with two cans of cat food.
The kitten devoured both.
It was clear that she had been going without enough food for some time. After feeding her, Kayla carefully picked her up and carried her into the coupleβs garage, where they prepared a large crate so she could stay somewhere safe overnight.
The plan was only supposed to be temporary. The couple already had a dog and had never intended to adopt a cat.
But within just a few hours, their plans began to change.
βWe were not planning on getting a cat,β Kayla said. βBut I was already starting to love her.β
The following morning, they took the kitten to the veterinarian. They named her Callie.
Unfortunately, the vet visit revealed that Callie had no microchip, suggesting that she had likely been surviving on her own for quite some time.
She also had fleas and ringworm, meaning she would need extensive treatment before she could safely join the rest of the household.
By then, however, Brendan and Kayla had already made their decision.
Callie was staying.

The kitten remained in quarantine in the garage while she recovered. Because the couple also had a dog, they needed to be particularly careful about preventing the ringworm from spreading.
Despite everything she was going through, Callie remained remarkably affectionate.
βBecause of the fleas, we had to keep her quarantined in a crate set up in our garage,β Kayla explained. βShe managed really well and was always friendly from the beginning. She would rub her head affectionately on my hands.β
Every day, the couple cleaned and disinfected Callieβs living area and carefully followed her treatment routine. She received medicated baths and oral medication to help eliminate the infection.
It was a demanding process, but Callie made things easier by remaining gentle and cooperative throughout her recovery.
βShe was a trooper the entire time,β Kayla said.
After about two months of treatment, Callie was finally declared free of ringworm.
She could now take the next step toward becoming a permanent member of the family: getting spayed.
By this point, her quarantine area had been moved from the garage into the bathroom. This gave Callie an opportunity to become familiar with Cora while still keeping the two animals safely separated.
Slowly, the animals became accustomed to one another.
Then, after Callie had recovered from her surgery, the moment everyone had been waiting for finally arrived.
Kayla and Brendan opened the bathroom door and allowed Callie to explore the rest of her new home.
The tiny, frightened kitten who had once appeared on their doorstep was finally home.
Nearly a year after Callie first ran toward the couple, her transformation is remarkable.
When they found her, she weighed only about 4 pounds and was desperately thin. Now, she is a healthy, happy cat who has no trouble making her feelings known when it’s time for a meal.
She also loves nothing more than curling up with the people who gave her a second chance.
Callie may have started her life as a stray with no one to care for her, but she eventually found exactly what she had been looking for when she ran across that street.
For Brendan and Kayla, rescuing her was never something they planned. But today, they cannot imagine their family without her.
βWe truly feel so grateful to have her in our family, and she is a symbol of resilience to us,β Kayla said. βThrough it all, sheβs maintained her sweet and affectionate nature. Sheβs the sweetest girl.β
