DURHAM, England (AP) β€” A donkey sanctuary in Durham has revealed that it is overcapacity and struggling to find suitable homes for the animals in its care.

Durham Donkey Rescue, a charity that primarily takes in rescues from across north-east England, is currently looking after 24 donkeys, despite only having space and resources for around 20.

Ian Emmerson, the charity’s founder and head, shared the challenges they are facing. “We’ve only been a charity for two years, and it’s been non-stop trying to build new shelters and make things work,” he said.

Emmerson, who started the rescue after retiring, initially intended for the work to be part-time. However, the demands of running the sanctuary have grown to consume most of his time.

Rehoming the donkeys has been another hurdle. The charity follows a strict vetting process to ensure the animals are placed in the right environment. “When you find the right person, they’ll listen and take on board what you say,” Emmerson explained.

One key requirement is that donkeys are rehomed in pairs or with owners who already have donkeys. This is to support the animals’ social nature, as donkeys form strong bonds and thrive in the company of their own kind.

“When you introduce a lonely donkey to another, you can see their whole demeanor change β€” it’s like they come to life again,” Emmerson said.

While the sanctuary has managed to care for the influx of donkeys so far, Emmerson expressed concern about the future. He described the increased numbers of donkeys last year as possibly “just a blip,” but warned that if such numbers continue, the charity might not be able to cope.

The sanctuary’s challenges reflect a growing issue with abandoned or neglected donkeys in the region. Emmerson and his team are calling for more awareness and support to help ensure these animals are given the care and companionship they need.

Durham Donkey Rescue remains committed to its mission, but with limited resources and space, the charity is urgently seeking new homes and additional support to continue its work.
