โ€œAll right, you can be trooper today.โ€

Ohio Trooper Rescues Dog From Busy Highway โ€” And Briefly Loses His Job to Him

Earlier this month, Sergeant Brett Claxon of the Ohio State Highway Patrol found himself in an unexpected situation โ€” not just performing a roadside rescue, but briefly handing over the reins of his patrol car to a new โ€œrecruit.โ€

While on duty, Claxon spotted a dog standing in the middle of a busy interstate, dangerously positioned in a lane of fast-moving traffic. Fortunately, oncoming drivers slowed down and stopped, allowing the trooper to quickly and safely guide the pup out of harmโ€™s way.

But once the dog was secured in his patrol vehicle, Claxon realized heโ€™d just gained a very enthusiastic partner โ€” one who had no intention of riding in the back seat. Instead, the dog hopped into the front and settled right into the driverโ€™s seat.

Caught on camera, Claxon can be heard joking, โ€œAre you going to be the trooper today? All right, you can be trooper today.โ€

The moment of role reversal didnโ€™t last long. Claxon gently relocated his furry passenger to the back, but by that point, a bond had already formed.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol later shared a cheerful update:
โ€œWeโ€™re happy to report that our furry friend was safely returned to its owner.โ€

Itโ€™s still a mystery how the dog ended up on the highway, but whatโ€™s crystal clear is that Claxonโ€™s quick thinking โ€” and kind heart โ€” helped turn a potentially tragic moment into a feel-good rescue story.

For a brief moment, the trooper gave up his badge and steering wheel โ€” and in return, gained a heartwarming memory he likely wonโ€™t forget anytime soon.
