He’s gone but not forgotten.
In 2012, Spiro Vganges and his family welcomed a shelter dog named Lex into their lives — a decision that would shape the next decade in unforgettable ways. Through every high and low, Lex remained a constant presence.
“He was always by my side,” Vganges shared with The Dodo. “The most loving, gentle, amazing animal I’d ever met.”
Lex’s gentle nature made an impression on everyone, including the family’s second dog, Vaughn, who joined the household about seven years later. Vaughn, full of energy, often pestered Lex to play, while Lex, older and more patient, did his best to keep up. Their relationship grew from playful pestering into a quiet, inseparable companionship.
But time eventually caught up with Lex. Last month, after years of devotion and love, he passed away.
To give Vaughn closure, the family allowed him a final moment with Lex. It seemed to help — but the loss was still deeply felt. Vaughn had lost his best friend.
Wanting to preserve Lex’s memory, Vganges created a shadowbox filled with keepsakes: Lex’s paw print, a lock of fur, his ashes, and treasured photos. He placed it on the family’s piano, never expecting just how meaningful it would become — not only for himself, but for Vaughn.
Almost immediately, Vaughn noticed the memorial. “I told him, ‘Hey, do you see Lex?’ and his ears perked right up,” Vganges recalled. “He leaned in close, excited, as if recognizing his old friend.”
Since that night, Vaughn has returned to the shadowbox every day, quietly visiting Lex’s memory as if to feel near him again. For Vganges, those small moments reveal the depth of their bond — and provide comfort to the family, too.
“It shows how much he loved Lex,” Vganges said. “We were so lucky to have Lex in our lives. And we’re just as lucky to have Vaughn.”
