NHS Staff Reconnect and Recharge with Donkey-Assisted Mindfulness

Staff from the Children & Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) recently took a much-needed break to focus on their own wellbeing during a team day at The Donkey Sanctuary in Sidmouth, East Devon. This unique opportunity allowed the group of 25 NHS workers to unwind, reconnect, and practice mindfulness in the serene company of donkeys.

Mindfulness with a Donkey Twist

The team day, led by the Donkey Assisted Activities (DAA) centre staff, included grounding activities aimed at promoting mindfulness and reducing stress. Among the highlights was a mindfulness body scan, where participants tuned into their bodies and observed sensations without judgment.

Sophie Channon, a DAA Equine Coach, explained:

β€œPracticing mindfulness techniques is a great way to reduce stress and anxiety, allowing participants to focus on the present moment rather than past worries or future concerns.”

The group then spent time with the donkey herd, engaging in calming interactions. Miniature donkeys Harry and William stole the show with their cheeky photo-bombing antics, while donkeys Dennis and Zebedee formed meaningful connections with specific team members.

Donkeys as Natural Therapists

The donkeys provided immediate feedback to the group’s energy, seeking interactions when sensing calm and inviting an uplifting atmosphere. For many participants, the interaction was deeply restorative.

  • Rosie Preston, Interim Operational Manager, shared:β€œI enjoyed spending time with Zebedee, who leaned against me during ear scratches. The interaction was incredibly comforting.”

Restoring Resilience in Challenging Times

This wellbeing day came at a crucial moment for the staff, many of whom reported feelings of burnout. The activities encouraged reflection, with several participants pledging to integrate mindfulness practices into their daily routines.

  • Holly Billington, Children and Family Health Devon Service Lead, remarked:β€œThis session came at the perfect time. It was hugely restorative, and the sanctuary team provided exceptional care from start to finish.”

Bridging Human and Animal Wellbeing

The day at The Donkey Sanctuary underscored the therapeutic power of animal-assisted interactions, benefiting both people and animals. Additionally, it highlighted the sanctuary’s mission to promote positive attitudes toward donkeys while fostering personal growth and resilience for participants.

By reconnecting with nature, animals, and themselves, the CAMHS staff left the day feeling refreshed, inspired, and ready to bring a renewed sense of mindfulness into their essential work supporting children and families.
