“I said, ‘No matter what, I’m going to get you out of here.’”
For Clobaldo Dongo, a passionate cyclist from Peru’s arid desert coast, long-distance rides across empty roadways are nothing unusual. But one recent ride turned into an unforgettable mission of compassion when he came across a helpless dog fighting for her life in the scorching sands.
As Dongo pedaled through a remote stretch of dunes, he noticed a small black figure curled up on the roadside. Curious, he stopped—and discovered a terrified, dehydrated dog barely clinging to survival.
“She was very scared,” Dongo told The Dodo. “She tried to bite me at first, but she must have sensed my intentions and let me help her.”
A Two-Hour Rescue on Foot
The cyclist immediately offered the weak pup his water, giving her her first drink in what may have been days. But the dog was too frail to walk on her own. Without hesitation, Dongo lifted her into his arms and began carrying her toward the nearest town.
“I said, ‘No matter what, I’m going to get you out of here,’” he recalled.
For two grueling hours under the desert sun, Dongo walked with the dog in his arms until they reached a small shop where he was finally able to buy her food.
A New Family Steps In
While in town, Dongo connected with a local animal lover who promised to care for the rescued dog alongside her family. Though Dongo couldn’t adopt her himself, he made plans to return and check on her soon.
“I plan to return to the spot later this month to see her again,” he said.
A Message That Inspired Thousands
When Dongo shared the story online, his followers were deeply moved by his compassion and determination. Many praised him for not turning a blind eye to an animal in need.
“It feels good to save a life,” Dongo wrote in response. “We can all be angels for someone. It was my turn.”
Thanks to one cyclist’s kindness and perseverance, a dog once left to die in the desert now has a second chance at life.
