A would-be thief never made it far after a herd of llamas stopped him cold in a dark field and held him there until police arrived.

The unusual arrest happened last Monday evening on farmland in Derbyshire, England.

An Alarm in the Night

Late that night, animals on the property belonging to Heidi Price and her partner, Graham Oliver, suddenly began making loud alarm calls.

At the same time, a man fleeing police cut through a fence and ran onto their farmland, hoping to escape after stealing from a woman nearby.

However, his plan quickly unraveled.

Surrounded by Eight Watchful Guards

As the suspect sprinted across the field, eight llamas galloped toward him.

Instead of scattering, they surrounded him.

Within moments, the animals formed a tight circle around the intruder and began making a loud warning sound โ€” a call that immediately caught Grahamโ€™s attention.

Realizing something was wrong, he headed into the field with his dog.

A โ€œCitizens Arrestโ€

When Graham reached the scene, he found the suspect standing frozen in fear, completely encircled by the six-foot-tall animals.

The llamas refused to back away.

Meanwhile, Grahamโ€™s dog barked around the manโ€™s feet, which only added to his panic.

Together, the animals effectively held the suspect in place until police arrived.

Escorted Back to Police

Once officers reached the area, Graham carefully led the shaken intruder back across the field and over the fence where the police took him into custody.

According to Heidi, the outcome could have been far worse.

If the man had wandered deeper into the farmland, he might have encountered several large bulls โ€” a situation that would have been far more dangerous than facing the llamas.

Calm Under Pressure

Despite the chaos, the llamas remained surprisingly well-mannered throughout the ordeal.

They didnโ€™t spit, charge, or act aggressively. Instead, they simply held their ground and maintained their circle until help arrived.

As Heidi joked afterward, the llamas had carried out a perfect โ€œcitizens arrest.โ€

From Rescue Animals to Quiet Heroes

Heidi originally took in the llamas about 10 years ago when a nearby farm shut down. At the time, the animals werenโ€™t comfortable around people and avoided close contact.

However, during the pandemic, she patiently worked with them until they grew calm and confident.

Today, the same llamas serve as therapy animals, helping support people with mental health challenges โ€” and, as it turns out, deterring crime as well.

A Thief Caught โ€” With Manners Intact

Police later confirmed they arrested a man in his 30s on suspicion of theft and released him on bail.

Throughout the entire incident, Heidi noted one final detail with pride.

Even when faced with adversity, the llamas kept their manners.
