TJ the Cockapoo Triumphs as Westminster Dog of the Year 2023

In a heartwarming victory, TJ, a playful Cockapoo, won the prestigious Westminster Dog of the Year competition. Accompanied by Mims Davies, the Conservative MP for Mid-Sussex, TJ charmed the judges with his personality and loyalty.

The Westminster Dog of the Year event, held in Victoria Tower Gardens near Parliament, is organized by Dogs Trust and The Kennel Club. This competition allows MPs to showcase their dogs and raise awareness about important dog-related issues.

TJ showed determination and beat many ‘political’ opponents to secure the title of Westminster Dog of the Year, one of the most sought-after awards in British politics.

The campaign for the title involved voting by constituents. The judging panel, made up of Dr. Paula Boyden from Dogs Trust, Mark Beazley from The Kennel Club, and Edward Timpson, the 2021 runner-up, assessed the dogs based on their heroic deeds and dedication.

This year’s theme was responsible dog ownership, highlighting the importance of training, socialization, and responsible behavior by owners.

Mims Davies said: “We are overjoyed; this is TJ’s first participation in the Westminster Dog of the Year competition. We are very proud of TJ; he performed brilliantly today. The competition was huge. We couldn’t be prouder of TJ; he has been a real star.”

The judges faced a tough task in choosing the winner due to the strong bonds between MPs and their dogs. Dr. Paula Boyden said: “Westminster Dog of the Year is a great opportunity to highlight the important role dogs play in society and to raise awareness about key dog-related issues.”

Mark Beazley congratulated TJ and Mims Davies on their win, acknowledging the high level of competition this year. Edward Timpson added his congratulations, emphasizing the event’s significance in showcasing the bond between MPs and their dogs.

Cadi, a Cocker Spaniel with Anna McMorrin, Labour MP for Cardiff North, took second place, while third place went to Bertie, a Black Labrador accompanying James Delaney, Conservative MP for Bury North. The Sir David Amess Pawblic Vote, named in honor of the late Conservative MP and advocate for dog welfare, was awarded to Paco, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel with Rosie Duffield, Labour MP for Canterbury. The event celebrated not only the winners but also the relationships between MPs and their dogs.
