Residents are being reminded about the proper disposal methods for fireworks ahead of Bonfire Night on Tuesday.
Guernsey Waste has warned that fireworks can pose a serious risk to waste management staff and may cause fires in collection vehicles or at disposal sites.
To safely dispose of fireworks, the service advises allowing them to cool for at least 30 minutes, soaking them in water for at least one hour, and then wrapping them in plastic before disposing of them with general household waste.
They further cautioned, “Do not store unused fireworks for later use, as they can create a fire hazard.”
Escaped Animals
The GSPCA has announced preparations for a busy period at its animal shelter as Bonfire Night nears.
Manager Steve Byrne noted that, “Fortunately, there are fewer suppliers of fireworks this year.”
He added, “The loud bangs and bright lights can often scare animals, leading to a rise in escaped pets during this time.”
Byrne expressed hope that both the fireworks displays and the audiences can enjoy the celebrations, emphasizing, “At the GSPCA, we are committed to ensuring the safety and welfare of all animals in Guernsey.”
