β€œShe was incredibly stressed.”

Mama Cat and Her Kittens Rescued from a Tight Spot, Thanks to Quick Action

In a small town in England, a sweet, desperate cat waited for help β€” trapped between a building and a fence, unable to move. Her eyes pleaded for rescue, not only for herself but for her vulnerable kittens too.

It wasn’t long before someone noticed her plight, and they quickly called the RSPCA. When the team arrived, they found the mama cat stressed, dehydrated, and stuck in a tight space. To make matters worse, one of her kittens was trapped behind a slate, out of her reach.

β€œHer stress was palpable,” said Scarlet Sanderson, an animal rescue officer with the RSPCA. β€œThe kitten was cold and needed its mum.”

With patience and care, Sanderson spent over an hour using a rescue pole to carefully extricate each kitten and bring them to safety. Once all the kittens were accounted for, Sanderson gently coaxed the mother cat out of hiding. The entire family was finally safe.

β€œI took them to RSPCA Greater Manchester Animal Hospital for a check-up,” Sanderson shared. β€œThankfully, they were all healthy and have since gone to the RSPCA’s Manchester and Salford Branch for some much-needed TLC.”

Sadly, the mama cat wasn’t microchipped, so it’s unclear if she had been abandoned or had been living as a stray. With kitten season in full swing, rescues and shelters worldwide are overwhelmed by the rising number of cats and kittens in need of help.

β€œKitten season is a time when most kittens are born, and as a charity, we see an influx of cats coming into our care,” said Alice Potter, a cat welfare expert at the RSPCA. β€œWith the cost of living crisis, we’re concerned that there will be even more cats needing help at a time when our centers are already at capacity.”

To help address the issue, the RSPCA is urging the public to donate or consider fostering. This mama cat and her kittens were lucky to be found in time, but many others are still in need.

Thanks to the quick action of rescuers, this sweet family has been given the chance to heal and grow, with the hope of finding forever homes when the time is right.
