A Reunion Years in the Making

Four years after losing her beloved cat, Tinsel, Maggie DeGreenia never imagined she’d see her again. But a single message from a cousin changed everything — and led to an emotional reunion that felt almost impossible.

The Day Tinsel Vanished

Tinsel disappeared in December 2021, after accidentally slipping out of DeGreenia’s home. What followed were weeks of frantic searching.

DeGreenia posted in Facebook groups, contacted local shelters, and put up missing posters. She searched by car and on foot, hoping for even the smallest sign.

“We called local shelters for weeks,” DeGreenia said. “We searched everywhere.”

Despite her efforts, no leads surfaced.

Learning to Let Go

Eventually, reality set in. With no sightings and no calls, DeGreenia was forced to accept that Tinsel might never come home.

The 27-year-old Vermonter had adopted Tinsel in 2017 from a shelter in Lunenburg. They had spent four happy years together before her sudden disappearance.

“I gave up,” DeGreenia admitted. “I just hoped she was safe and had found a loving home.”

A Message That Changed Everything

Then, years later, DeGreenia received an unexpected text from her cousin.

“Hey, this is important — I think I found Tinsel.”

Her cousin had spotted a familiar face on a local shelter’s website. The photo showed a cat with an unmistakable marking: Tinsel’s signature little moustache.

Tears, Hope, and a Phone Call

DeGreenia was overwhelmed.

“I was in disbelief when I saw the photo,” she told SWNS. “I immediately broke down in tears.”

Still shaking, she called Riverside Rescue, explaining her story through sobs and hoping against all odds that the cat was really hers.

A Love That Never Faded

When Maggie finally saw Tinsel in person, there was no doubt.

The cat walked straight up to her and pressed her forehead gently against Maggie’s — a familiar gesture of affection that confirmed everything.

“It was the most incredible feeling,” DeGreenia said.

How Tinsel Survived

According to the shelter, Tinsel had been taken in by people who cared for her for a time before eventually surrendering her in December. Thanks to that kindness, she stayed safe until fate stepped in.

Finally Home

After four long years apart, Maggie and Tinsel were reunited — proof that some bonds don’t fade with time, distance, or loss.

What once felt like a goodbye turned into a second chance neither of them expected — but both had waited for.
