“I knew from the moment she came over, she wasn’t feral …”
Sam was heading home on a cold April evening when something moving inside a small car dealership made her slow down. The place looked shut for the night — the gate was locked, the lights were off and no employees seemed to be around. Still, as someone with years of animal rescue experience, Sam had a strong feeling that an animal might be stuck inside.
She pulled over and called toward the rows of parked cars. Moments later, a small white-and-tan cat appeared behind the chain-link fence, crying for attention.
Luckily, Sam had cat food in her car. She opened a can and used it to gently lure the frightened cat closer. Before long, the little cat squeezed beneath the fence and hurried straight to her.
The cat was thin, dirty and clearly starving. She ate the food quickly, as if she hadn’t had a proper meal in a long time. Sam had helped many outdoor cats before, but this one immediately seemed different.
The cat was far too affectionate and comfortable around people to seem truly feral. Sam believed she had probably once belonged to someone.
No one knew exactly how the cat ended up alone at the dealership or how long she had been surviving there. But Sam knew one thing for sure — she wasn’t going to leave her behind.
After the cat finished eating, Sam picked her up and tried to place her in a carrier. The cat allowed Sam to hold her, but she had no interest in going into the crate. So Sam came up with another plan and let her ride in the passenger seat instead. To her surprise, the cat stayed calm the entire time.
Sam named her Adeline and took her straight to the vet. During the exam, the veterinary team discovered that Adeline had already been spayed. That made Sam even more convinced that Adeline had not always been a street cat.
Despite being underweight, Adeline was in decent health. Sam decided to foster her and give her a safe place to recover while searching for the right forever home.
Adeline adjusted quickly to life indoors and even spent time around Sam’s three cats. Sam cared deeply for her, but she felt Adeline would do best in a peaceful home where she could get plenty of attention.
Eventually, the perfect adopters came along. A kind couple visited Adeline at Sam’s house, fell in love with her and gave her the permanent home she deserved.
The cat who was once hungry and alone inside a dark, empty dealership is now safe, loved and completely spoiled by her new family. Sam still receives updates about Adeline and loves seeing how happy she is.
For Sam, every rescue leaves a mark — and Adeline will always be one of the special ones.
