They couldn’t just leave him there.

Hempstead, New York, is home to beautiful parks, beaches and wide natural spaces where many wild animals live, including turtles, herons, salamanders and coastal birds.

Recently, residents in the area noticed one of those animals in serious danger.

A laughing gull had become trapped in a piece of rope and was left hanging helplessly above a busy intersection. People passing by quickly realized the bird could not free himself and needed help right away.

Concerned witnesses called 911, and emergency dispatchers reached out to the Hempstead Village Police Department and the Hempstead Volunteer Fire Department. Firefighters were soon sent to the scene. Local animal rescuer John Debacker also heard about the situation and hurried over to assist however he could.

To keep everyone safe, the rescue team shut down the intersection. Then firefighters used an aerial platform on a fire truck to reach the trapped gull high above the road.

From the ground, Debacker watched as the firefighters carefully worked to remove the rope from the bird. After a tense few moments, the gull was finally freed.

For Debacker, seeing the bird released from the rope brought an immediate sense of relief.

Laughing gulls are a familiar sight around New York’s beaches, especially in the warmer months. Known for their distinctive calls, these birds are part of the local coastal wildlife, and Debacker was grateful this one had been saved before it was too late.

Once the firefighters brought the gull down safely, they handed him over to Debacker. He then transported the bird to Sweetbriar Nature Center, where wildlife experts could examine him and provide the care he needed.

Now in safe hands, the rescued gull finally has a chance to rest and recover.

With time, care and a little luck, he will soon be strong enough to return to the skies over Long Island, where he belongs.
