Prepare for a natural spectacle as Brood 13 and Brood 19, two cicada broods with distinct emergence cycles, converge in a synchronized event not witnessed since 1803. This awe-inspiring display of mass cicada emergence occurs every 13 and 17 years, respectively. The insects, having spent their entire lives underground, will surface for a simultaneous breeding and egg-laying frenzy.

Entomologists estimate that over a trillion cicadas will participate in this phenomenon, equivalent to a round trip to the moon 33 times when lined up head-to-tail. The convergence will be most notable in Iowa and Illinois, with the 17-year cicadas, known as Brood 19, extending their presence into several southern states, including Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia, with a few stragglers reaching Louisiana.

Witnessing this unique event is a rare opportunity, as the next convergence of these two cicada broods is not expected until 2245.

The upcoming convergence of Brood 13 and Brood 19 cicadas promises a spectacular and unique natural phenomenon, described by entomologist Jonathan Larson as a “macabre Mardi Gras.” The event involves a grand display of singing, courtship, and ultimately, the end of the cicadas’ life cycle.

Interestingly, the sheer number of cicadas mating can generate a decibel level comparable to that of a passing motorcycle or chainsaw. This auditory aspect adds an intriguing layer to the already fascinating event.

These cicadas are expected to emerge in spring and will conclude their life cycle in July. Despite their abundance, they pose no threat to humans, as they do not sting, bite, transmit diseases, or envenom. Moreover, their emergence serves ecological purposes, contributing to soil aeration in woodlands. As their lifeless bodies provide a feast for wildlife, even herbivorous animals like deer will eagerly consume these nutritious morsels.
