Often depicted as standoffish, domestic cats have demonstrated an ability to distinguish their owner’s voice from others. Now, extending this insight to their exotic kin such as tigers, cheetahs, and cougars, researchers reveal an ear for different tones, particularly evident in captive settings.
Professor Jennifer Vonk of Oakland University suggests that this skill resonates with the wild’s demands, enabling these animals to identify their own kin and remain vigilant against potential threats in their territory. Moreover, it enhances their responsiveness to alarm calls from other species, underscoring a broader social awareness.
Documented in the journal PeerJ, Vonk and her colleagues scrutinized various exotic cat species residing in captive environments like zoos and sanctuaries. Through meticulous audio experiments, they observed nuanced reactions to familiar and unfamiliar human voices, alongside recordings of their own names.
Results unveiled a pronounced preference for familiar voices, irrespective of upbringing or sex, indicating a remarkable capacity for individual recognition. Even when excluding social cats like lions from the analysis, this preference persisted, suggesting a deeper cognitive capability.
Contrary to assumptions, this ability doesn’t stem solely from domestication but rather from consistent exposure to humans. Vonk speculates that similar results might manifest in wild cats exposed to human presence regularly.
