Benji and Balu Begin a New Life of Freedom on the Isle of Wight
Two brown bears who once lived in a cage outside a restaurant in Azerbaijan have finally found peace β and freedom β at their new home in the Wildheart Animal Sanctuary on the Isle of Wight.
After a remarkable 3,000-mile journey that began with a flight to Glasgow and continued over land to Portsmouth, Benji and Balu made the final leg of their trip across the Solent to Sandown on the islandβs southeast coast.

Their relocation is the result of a year-long campaign by the Wildheart Animal Sanctuary, which raised nearly Β£218,000 to fund the construction of a custom-built enclosure and cover their complex travel arrangements.
The sanctuary described their arrival on Wednesday morning as βa landmark moment.β
βThese brothers have endured years in cruel confinement, used as a spectacle to attract diners,β said Lawrence Bates, CEO of Wildheart. βNow, Benji and Balu will experience grass beneath their paws, cool water to wallow in, and expert care every day. They finally get the life they deserve.β

Originally moved to a temporary shelter by Azerbaijanβs Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources two years ago, the bears had been waiting for a permanent, humane home β and now, at last, they have it.
Though curious and keen to explore, Benji and Balu will remain out of public view for the time being as they settle into their new surroundings. Their enclosure is a haven β complete with soft grass, natural ponds, shaded trees, and cosy dens β a far cry from the bare concrete of their past.
This relocation is not just a rescue β itβs a powerful reminder of whatβs possible when compassion, persistence, and global cooperation come together.
