An elderly jaguar and her aging son have just begun a new chapter of their lives in a purpose-built retirement habitat at a zoo in the United Kingdom.

Bonita, now 16 years old, has already outlived the typical lifespan of wild jaguars, which averages around 12 years. Her son, Remi, is 11 — and his story is especially remarkable, as he previously survived a battle with cancer.

The mother-and-son pair have lived together at a safari park since Remi was born, and caretakers made it a top priority to keep them side by side as they were relocated to their new enclosure at Chester Zoo in England.

Their move was the result of months of careful coordination with specialists from Europe’s jaguar conservation program.

“Bonita and Remi are incredibly special,” said Dave Hall, Chester Zoo’s Team Manager of Carnivores. “We’re thrilled to offer them a peaceful retirement home here.”

Hall emphasized the strong bond between the two cats, noting that Bonita has cared for Remi throughout his entire life. “Keeping them together was essential,” he said.

Remi’s survival has been nothing short of extraordinary. In 2019, veterinarians removed a tumor from his head after diagnosing him with hemangiosarcoma — an aggressive form of cancer. His continued good health years later is a testament to the care he’s received.

Zoo staff worked closely with partners across the UK and Europe to plan every aspect of the transition, from transportation logistics to the design of the new habitat.

“It’s wonderful to see them settling in so comfortably and exploring their new space together,” Hall added. Chester Zoo has since shared video footage showing the pair confidently roaming their new surroundings.

Jaguars, the largest big cats in Latin America, are currently classified as “Near Threatened” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Habitat destruction from agriculture and illegal hunting continues to threaten their survival.

Now, Bonita and Remi can enjoy their golden years together — safe, cared for and exactly where they belong.
